Hiring Youth with Disabilities

Mayor Daley’s Youth Ready Chicago provides individuals, ages 16-24, with disabilities the opportunity to obtain apprenticeships, internships and jobs that will build a bridge between their classroom experiences and possible career choices.

The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD), the Department of Family and Support Services and the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) partner with local businesses to help students with disabilities experience the realities of the workplace and gain knowledge in the occupation of their choice.  MOPD also connects participating students with professional mentors with disabilities to foster positive relationships that address various employment-related issues.

Employers will benefit by having the opportunity to:

  • gain immediate access to an untapped diverse workforce;
  • utilize interns that have undergone an extensive recruitment, pre-screening and preparation process by MOPD and CPS;
  • cultivate careers in their respective industry;
  • make a contribution to the community where current employees, customers and business partners live and work; and
  • share their knowledge and skills with tomorrow’s workforce

Students will benefit by gaining:

  • valuable work experience while working full time for eight (8) weeks, beginning in June and ending in August with a minimum starting wage of $8.00 per hour (Dates can be modified to meet employer/employee needs);
  • a greater awareness of options for future employment, careers and professional development;
  • a competitive edge through useful marketable skills;
  • a professional mentor with a disability to provide guidance and support, who will also assist with helping the teen build interpersonal skills that are needed to relate to co-workers and those in roles of authority;
  • early practice in learning time management skills and strong work habits; and
  • disability awareness resource
